Godzilla has arrived in Fortnite as a playable boss that can stomp across the map.
Transforming into Godzilla gives you access to powerful abilities that can level cities and annihilate other players — as long as you’re the first to enter a special portal. Becoming Godzilla is easier said than done as you must find the portal that spawns randomly, and only one player can turn into deadly kaiju a game.
Here’s how to find and become Godzilla in Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 1.
Update (Jan. 28): Godzilla’s spawn rate has been reduced following a limited-time 100% appearance chance between Jan. 24-26.
When and where Godzilla spawns in Fortnite
To become Godzilla in Fortnite, you’ll need to find a portal and be the first player to jump inside. The appearance rate of the portal varies frequently, with the rate currently at 60%, according to ShiinaBR on X. The good news is it will be 100% again before the “Titan Takedown” event ends on Friday, Jan. 31 — so this reduction is only temporary.
(For context, on Godzilla’s debut the chance was 20% — in other words, one in five matches — before doubling to 40% soon after, before receiving a time-limited boost to 100% over Jan 24-26.)
When the portal spawns, it’ll appear somewhere on the map as soon as the first Storm Circle begins to shrink. You’ll know when this happens as a security alert will pop up on the bottom half of your screen with the message “Godzilla Portal is open,” along with a ping with the portal’s location.
You can also open your map to see the portal’s location, which is marked with an icon of Godzilla:
As the portal spawns fairly early on in the game, you’ll have very little time to reach the portal if it doesn’t spawn in your vicinity, as there are a lot of players still alive. If it spawns far away from you, your best bet is to hoard as much ammo as you can to take Godzilla down.
To help with becoming Godzilla, the community has worked out the portal will spawn in one of seven specific spots. Though useful in that you can position yourself near one of these locations, they are spread out just enough that you still won’t get there in time if it’s not in the cluster closest to you. Still — if you’re having particularly bad luck becoming Godzilla, this could help.
On the bright side, if you don’t become Godzilla, there are a handful of quests you can complete:
- Acquire Godzilla’s Medallion by doing the most damage to him
- Hit Godzilla using a Quad Launcher or Rail Gun
- Dash with Godzilla’s Fragment
- Search Monarch’s Supply Drop
The best way to rack up damage is to shoot the glowing spikes along Godzilla’s back. This will deal bonus damage, and shoot you up the damage charts. To check if you’re dealing the most damage against Godzilla, look at the “Damage Inflicted” bar beneath Godzilla’s health bar.
How to play as Godzilla in Fortnite
After you enter the portal, you’ll become Godzilla and gain three abilities:
- Roar — Unleash a roar that reveals nearby players
- Mighty Stomp — Launch your enemies as you stomp the ground.
- Heat Ray — Fire a laser capable of destroying players and structures.
Additionally, you can forgo the abilities and simply walk over other players to do damage!
