Set in a world of intrigue and turmoil, the game features deeply strategic real-time battles, diorama-style visuals, and stunning music. Whether you’re an experienced SRPG veteran or brand new to the genre, you’ll find a lot to enjoy here. Read on and I’ll tell you six key things you need to know about it.
It tells an epic, sweeping tale of war and honor
If you like games with sweeping, hard-hitting stories, you’ll love The DioField Chronicle. The game is set in a unique world that fuses fantasy, medieval and modern-day influences. This land is not a peaceful one – the entire continent has been ravaged by a devastating war between the Empire and the Alliance. Despite this turmoil, one nation has remained unaffected – the Kingdom of Alletain on DioField Island.
Alletain is rich in Jade – a precious material that’s prized for its use as a base ingredient in sorcery. Something so valuable will inevitably draw attention, and as the conflict between Empire and Alliance escalates, both turn their gaze towards the island. War is coming to DioField… with the Kingdom of Alletain caught in the middle.
Amid the flames and chaos, an elite band of mercenaries emerges that call themselves Blue Fox. This small group of warriors will come to shape the fate of DioField… and the world itself. It’s an expansive tale that’s full of drama and epic moments… but it also remembers that it’s the characters that really matter. Speaking of which…
It’s full of memorable characters
You take control of the Blue Fox mercenaries and follow these fascinating, flawed heroes through their many battles. Allow us to introduce the four heads of the team:
Andrias Rhondarson
Andrias is calm, cool, and a highly resourceful leader. He has studied strategy and tactics, and is well-versed in the Ancient Sorcery that has been passed down on DioField through the generations.
When he was young, he caught the eye of a nobleman who recognized something special within him. He trained as a soldier, ultimately becoming the chamberlain and bodyguard of Prince Levantia Shaytham.
But when disaster strikes and Levantia is attacked by assassins, Andrias’ life is thrown into turmoil – and a new path presents itself.
Fredret Lester
Fredret is so big, buff, and burly that you might assume he’d serve as an infantryman. Instead, however, he opts to leverage his superb riding skills and freely gallops around the battlefield on horseback.
He’s known Andrias since childhood, and the two have gone through many life-threatening situations together. As a result, they share a near-unbreakable bond of brotherhood.
Fredret is kind-hearted, honest, and direct – something people admire him for. However, he’s also a little naïve, perhaps due to his upbringing in the countryside. He also tends to become obsessed with the things he’s passionate about.
Iscarion Colchester
Iscarion Colchester is a prodigiously talented archer – something that serves him well as a mercenary.
Of course, he wasn’t always a Blue Fox. The son of a minor noble, Iscarion followed the Colchester tradition of joining the local order of knights. However, due to a personal tragedy, he left and instead became a knight-errant, travelling alone across the kingdom.
He may seem aloof, but he will never ignore those in need. Because of this, he’s greatly respected by those he commands.
Waltaquin Redditch
Waltaquin became interested in magic at an early age and immersed herself in the wide-ranging study of Ancient Sorcery. Now, she’s a magicker beyond compare.
As the daughter of one of Suffield’s most prominent noblemen, she’s been spoiled her entire life – and has the attitude to match. She can be selfish and arrogant, but her grace and intelligence are undeniable.
You’ll become intimately acquainted with all these characters – and many more – over the course of this epic story. Their struggles become your struggles, and by the end they’ll feel like family.
It introduces the thrilling Real-Time Tactical Battle system
But enough about story – how does the game actually play? The DioField Chronicle introduces a dynamic battle system that fuses command-based tactics with real-time tactics. It’s called the Real-Time Tactical Battle system and it makes for fast-paced, richly strategic battles that require you to be attentive and adaptable to prevail.
Although you can pause the game to give out orders and ponder your strategy, everything plays out in real-time. Unlike many other strategy RPGs, enemies don’t sit around twiddling their thumbs while your troops execute your commands – they’ll move as you do.
The battlefield is also full of ‘gimmicks’ – from turrets, to barricades, to exploding kegs, that both you and the enemy can take advantage of. All this makes for wildly unpredictable combat, where the flow of battle is ever changing.
Like all good tactics games, good planning and a smart strategy is key to success, but you need to be adaptable too. A plan that was working at the start of a fight may lose effectiveness if enemies move out of position, for example, so you need to be ready with a new approach.
It’s an audio-visual treat
All the action takes place in richly detailed environments that are portrayed with attractive diorama-style visuals. Not only is it stunning to look at – particularly in 4K on Xbox Series X|S – it gives the game a unique look that’s entirely its own!
The audio side is equally impressive, thanks to be beautifully orchestrated music by world-renowned composers Ramin Djawadi and Brandon Campbell – best known for their work on “Game of Thrones.” It’s a feast for the eyes and the ears. But don’t take my word for it…
