When I fired up Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series for the first time, I was expecting a classic action platforming game that evokes feelings of nostalgia. I certainly got that feeling and so much more. Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series has an unexpected depth to its story. It has a flair of drama that sends you on two surprising and fantastical adventures in the worlds of Phantomile and Lunatea.
The first thing I noticed about Klonoa, compared to other action platformers, is its story. Platformers often feature a mute protagonist, but Klonoa can talk. You’ll start your adventure off with Klonoa’s best friend, Huepow, and interact with many NPCs that each play important roles in the story. When you play Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series, you’ll discover there’s more than meets the eye with this cute and charming duo.
Speaking of duos, Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series also features multiplayer! A second player can hop in via Support Mode to help Klonoa on his journey. In Support Mode, the second player can press the B button to add a boost of wind power to Klonoa’s jump. Use the Support Jump to gain tremendous heights when platforming, solving jumping puzzles, or avoiding danger (or cause chaos for your adventuring partner)!
Several accessibility and extra functions have also been added to Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series. A new “Easy” difficulty has been added for accessibility. Then, after beating the game on “Easy” or “Normal,” the “Hard” difficulty becomes unlocked. If “Hard” isn’t difficult enough, there is now also a new “Stopwatch Mode” to help manage speed run challenges! To further help with a smoother flow, especially those who speed running, the tutorials for the game can also be toggled to off so that your run can be played uninterrupted.
Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series is a gem of a game, and everyone should experience it!
